Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the trash from one of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
